Mike Moore, CEO mmoore@cturecords.com | Mike Moore retired as the City of Inkster Fire Chief after 30 years of service in public safety with the City to start a record label that catered to the type of music that had gotten away from the mainstream. A musician since childhood, in the mid 1980’s Mike started out as an assistant engineer at United Sound Systems recording studio owned by legendary producer Don Davis. It is here where Mike learned and perfected his engineering and production skills developing into one of the first call engineers in Detroit, until he left in 2000 after almost 15 years of service to start his own studio where he could work on his own projects on his own terms. After realizing not only did he want to work on his own projects he wanted to have control of the product that was released so he put together his own team and started CTU Records utilizing the budgeting skills, mindset and management experience he acquired in running a municipal fire department. The first artist on the label naturally was Roxanne Dawson who Mike met in the early 1980’s and began to call in as a session vocalist at United Sound while he was writing songs for Groovesville Publishing with his long time collaborator Garon (Newz) Smith. |

Becoming a member of the Detroit Sound Studio as a piano player and song writer, he wrote and played for a variety of artists including the Contours and Jr. Walker & the All Star Review. Developing his song writer talents enriched the piano playing ability, making him marketable and sought after to work with several well known recording artists. Topping off this remarkable musical career he became Carl Carlton's music director. "Composing music for those who like to be mesmerized by the magic of music and loving every minute of it!" |
Garon "Newz" Smith, Executive Vice President gsmith@cturecords.com | Garon “Newz” Smith started collaborating with Mike Moore after both had worked together in a band called “SoundProof” in the late 70s & early 80s. The two began to hone their skills as writers and producers and began to be part of a top group of session producers at United Sound/Groovesville studios. Although never straying far from Moore/Newz Productions as a central focus in the early 1980s, Newz began working with a number of other producers, like RJ Rice, The Barkays, and even members of Parliament Funkadelics. In the late 1980s Moore/Newz placed a song entitled “There’s No Other” on Deniece Williams’ “As Good As It Gets” album, and even received an honorable mention in People magazine that year for their contribution. Now Newz and Mike Moore team up to form the CTU record label, and introduce their first labor of love: the upcoming CD from Roxanne Dawson, entitled “Life is a Gift” with a dynamic single entitled “Love’s Not What It Seems”. The production team may be older, but definitely getting BETTER, with our noses, and ears to the grindstone, CTU records will be a label that caters to quality music content: ‘That’s why we’re here for the long haul’, says Newz. |
